Project Description

Bushiangala-Isulu and Ramula-Mwibona Sites have been identified as potential prospects for exploring Gold in Western Kenya. Consequently, a feasibility study (FS) has been initiated to establish whether the Ramula-Mwibona and Isulu-Bushiangala gold deposits are viable for mining. As part of the FS, a Socio-Economic Impact Assessment of the project’s impacts on various properties in the respective areas will be carried out. Land, a factor of production in people’s livelihoods, will be impacted.

For this purpose, a comprehensive cadastral database for the assessment of impacts on land will be required. The Cadastral database will be used to draw the information and statistics for this assessment. The development of a cadastral database will involve precise determination of the sizes of land parcels, land ownership and land use status. The execution of this process is guided by the Survey Act Cap 299, among other Acts of Parliament on matters of survey of boundaries.

The observation or survey of land boundaries for the determination of its location or size requires the use of reference marks in datum plans authenticated by the office of the Director of Surveys. These reference marks constitute the National Grid, which is a Geodetic Network with a specific set of definition parameters for reference on geo-spatial observations.

The general objectives of this exercise were:

  • To establish a control network that is connected to the national grid at the respective prospect sites for reference during the actual survey of land boundaries.
  • To facilitate establishing the geo-reference of the PIDs and project area boundary, among other data that will be referenced to the land.

The following activities were carried out:

  1. Sensitisation: Community engagement to explain the scope of activities and the need for them.
  2. Assessment of the Reference Control Network: Familiarisation and procedural status check on the condition and stability of the existing control monuments;
  3. Assessment and Establishment of Control Monuments: Monumentation of the new control network reference stations (Cast-in-place concrete Control Beacons, 2 for each site);
  4. Observations on the Control Network: Extension of the Reference Control Network by carrying out Static GNSS observations on the new Control Points;
  5. Maps Geo-referencing and Validation/ Truthing: Spatial registration of the PIDs concerning the Established Reference Control Network;
  6. Reporting: Preparation of Preliminary Survey Report (including Base Maps for Ramula-Mwibona and Bushi-Isulu Sites).
