According to the Government of Kenya long-term development plan “Vision 2030”, Kenya aims to be a middle-income country by 2030 and the development of the Mombasa Special Economic Zone (Mombasa SEZ) is mentioned as a priority project to achieve this goal. Towards this, the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has proposed to build a 53km 220kV transmission line (TL) from Mariakani-Dongo
Kundu to supply electricity to the Mombasa SEZ to be built in Dongo Kundu. The TL extends from Mariakani (Kilifi County) to Mombasa SEZ (Mombasa County) via Kwale County and a Substation at Dongo Kundu. The aim of the project is to provide adequate power supply for the proposed Special Economic Zone that will host an Industrial Park, Free Trade Zones, Residential Area, Enterprise and Port Facility among others components.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the Environmental and Social Impacts that will arise from the Construction and Operation of the proposed 220kV Transmission Line from Mariakani-Dongo Kundu and a Substation in Dongo Kundu in accordance with the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (1999) including the subsequent NEMA Regulations and also JICA Guidelines for Environmental and Social Considerations (20I0) and detailing findings and recommendations.
