The National Irrigation Board (NIB) through the Government of Kenya (GoK) has identified areas of expansion for rice growing in Mutithi Location of Mwea Division in Kirinyaga District. In order to achieve this objective, a dam will be constructed downstream of Thiba River in Kabare location, Gichugu division, Kirinyaga County. Land has been acquired at both the dam site and the irrigation areas. The land acquisition has led to displacement of persons who will be resettled on a 150 acre parcel of land acquired from Animal Health and Industry Training Institute (AHITI) in AHITI Ndomba near Kutus Town.
Panafcon was awarded Consultancy to carry out Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Studies of the resettlement site. The study was carried out taking to consideration that the host land has not been occupied before and the planned construction of residential houses, road network, drainage network, sanitation facilities and electricity supply network The ESIA Study Report containing the project Environmental Management Plan (EMP) including Monitoring was prepared and submitted to NEMA for review. The NEMA EIA License has been issued for project implementation.
